On February 29, Skeyes, in partnership with Middle East Strategic Perspectives, launched a mobile app, LOG&Learn, dedicated to providing accurate information about Lebanon’s nascent oil and gas sector, by answering user questions and fact-checking public statements about Lebanon’s potential resources.
LOG&Learn is part of a larger project entitled “Supporting Channels for Civic Engagement in the Management of the Lebanese Oil and Gas Sector” managed by the Samir Kassir Foundation with the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in partnership with Middle East Strategic Perspectives.
The app follows a thorough monitoring of Lebanese media coverage of the oil and gas sector, conducted by MESP as part of the same project between February 1 and April 15, 2014. The final report detailing the results of the monitoring showed there are numerous misconceptions surrounding the sector. This is not, in itself, surprising, considering this is a new sector for Lebanon. But it highlights the need to explain, verify and inform: explain what is happening in the sector, verify statements and claims, and provide accurate information. Informed citizens and journalists are better able to monitor the sector, demand transparency and hold the authorities accountable.
LOG&Learn is an innovative approach to give the Lebanese fast and accurate information on the oil and gas sector and its development. Information will be available in Arabic and English for a wider reach.
The app is available on Google Play Store and on the App Store.
